Great Introductory Textbook December 31, 2007 Tarheel Chemist (Sugar Land, TX USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have used the Corwin textbook in the 8th and 9th Edition to teach a introductory chemistry course, mainly for non-majors. The 8th Edition was universally loved by the students, according to their feedback on questionnaires. The 9th Edition was still very well liked, though rated slightly lower by the students. The Problem Solving Study Aids offer the students a clear roadmap to solving otherwise complicated problems. The types of problems introduced in each chapter are well summarized in the Problem-Solving Organizers. The Key Concepts help in reinforcing critical thinking, which do a good job of testing the students understanding of theory. The worked examples are well presented. The 9th Edition has more historical context for the material. The list of Key Terms for each chapter was helpful for the students to review the new vocabulary from each chapter. We did not receive the student study guide in time for it to be used in our course. The study guide for the 8th Edition was well-received by the students and I expect the study guide for the 9th Edition will be the same. I suspect that the lack of the study guide might have caused the lower rating seen in the student reviews of the 9th Edition. The Corwin Textbook is also well-supported by electronic resources, which the students found useful. This is an excellent introductory textbook.
Chemistry, the easy way! May 24, 2009 D. Knight (Florida, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
While Chemistry isn't something most people look forward to, this book does a great job of making it simple. So far my class has been a breeze. The book is very self-explanatory and has most of the answers in the back of the book to double-check your work. There is also a great accompanying website to check out.
